Adaptive learning platforms — the kind that adjust difficulty based on correct answers — have been around for years. They are better than static textbooks. They are not personalized learning. The problem is that answer accuracy is a thin signal. It tells you whether someone got something right. It does not tell you whether they understood it, whether they guessed, whether they are confused about a related concept three steps back, or whether they are simply disengaged. When a student asks “wait, but why does that happen?” versus “I think I understand but I’m not sure about the second part,” those are different signals. An LLM can read them. It can detect confusion from how someone phrases a question, not just whether they answered correctly.

This is what makes Socratic method scalable for the first time. The Socratic approach — asking questions instead of giving answers, surfacing the learner’s own reasoning rather than delivering conclusions — has always been the gold standard for deep understanding. It could not scale because it required a skilled human to hold the conversation. AI holds the conversation. It can ask the question that reveals the gap, wait for the learner to work toward the answer, and adapt the next question based on what the learner actually said. The 2-sigma problem that Bloom identified — the gap between individual tutoring and classroom instruction — is closeable, for the first time, without a 1-to-1 human ratio.

The challenge is that most AI tools are doing the opposite. The default behavior of a language model is to answer questions directly. Ask it to explain something and it explains it — completely, immediately, with no effort on the learner’s part. This replicates the lecture in conversational form. It is fast delivery of information that bypasses the construction process entirely. Active recall — the act of retrieving and reconstructing knowledge — is where learning actually happens. An AI tutor that just answers questions is not personalizing the learning experience. It is automating passive consumption. The format changed. The pedagogy did not.
